Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson, Mercedes 300SLR,1955 Mille Miglia
History was made on May 1st, 1955 when Stirling Moss won the 1000 mile Mille Miglia (from Brescia to Rome and back), becoming the first and only driver to achieve victory at one of the world's most challenging races. At his side was motor racing writer and navigator Dennis 'Jenks' Jenkinson who, immediately after the race, wrote a detailed 4,500 word story on the race, complete with full results, from his hotel room. This duo set the fastest ever time for the course at an average speed of nearly 98 mph - a record that has never been broken. As Jenkinson had said after previous Mille Miglias:"He who wins the Mille Miglia is some driver, and the car he uses is some sportscar."
